How it works

Medication management is an ongoing conversation.

01

Understand what you are experiencing

Your provider reviews symptoms, history, current medications, prior treatment, medical factors and how your mental health is affecting everyday life.
02

Discuss treatment options

If medication may be appropriate, your provider can discuss potential options, expected benefits, common side effects and alternatives. Medication is not automatically prescribed at every visit.
03

Monitor response over time

Follow-up visits help assess whether treatment is helping, whether side effects are occurring and whether a change in dose, medication or overall plan should be considered.
Conditions we commonly evaluate

Medication may be one part of a broader treatment plan.

Psychiatric medication management can be considered for a range of mental-health concerns. Your provider determines whether medication is clinically appropriate based on your individual evaluation.

ADHD and attention concerns

Focus · organization · impulsivity

Anxiety disorders

Worry · panic · physical anxiety symptoms

Depression

Mood · motivation · energy · functioning

Trauma-related symptoms

PTSD · acute stress · hyperarousal

Sleep-related concerns

Insomnia and sleep disruption when clinically appropriate
What to expect

Your first visit and follow-ups serve different purposes.

FIRST VISIT

Psychiatric evaluation

Your provider gathers a more complete history, reviews current concerns and discusses diagnostic impressions and treatment options. If you are already taking psychiatric medication, prior medical records are recommended when available. If medication is appropriate, the plan will be individualized to you.
FOLLOW-UP

Medication monitoring

Follow-up visits focus on symptom changes, functioning, medication effectiveness, tolerability, adherence and whether your treatment plan needs to be adjusted.
ONGOING

Care that can evolve

Mental-health needs can change. Your treatment plan may be continued, adjusted or reconsidered as your symptoms, circumstances and goals change over time.
Before your appointment

A little preparation can help your provider see the full picture.

01

If you are already taking medication

We recommend providing prior psychiatric or medical records when available, especially if another clinician has been prescribing your current medication. Records can help your provider review prior diagnoses, medication history, response to treatment and previous monitoring.
02

Telehealth is convenient, but some care may need to be in person

Many appointments can be completed through telehealth. Your provider may still recommend or require an in-person check-in based on your symptoms, medication plan, treatment progress or clinical needs.
A thoughtful prescribing approach

The goal is the right treatment — not simply more medication.

Psychiatric medications can be helpful for many people, but they are not the only option and they are not appropriate in every situation. Your provider may discuss medication, therapy, behavioral strategies, medical evaluation or other forms of support depending on your needs.
Prescribing decisions are based on clinical evaluation and medical necessity.
Medication type, dose and frequency are individualized.
Controlled medications are not guaranteed and may require additional monitoring, documentation or in-person follow-up.
Your provider may recommend a different level or type of care when appropriate.

Medication management FAQ

Questions patients often have before scheduling.

No. Your provider first evaluates your symptoms, history, current medications, medical considerations and treatment needs. Any prescribing decision is based on clinical judgment and medical appropriateness.
Many psychiatric evaluations and follow-up visits can be completed through telehealth when appropriate. However, your provider may recommend or require an in-person check-in based on your treatment needs, symptoms, medication plan or clinical judgment.
It is helpful to have an up-to-date medication list, information about prior psychiatric medications and treatment, relevant medical history, allergies and any recent labs. If you are already taking psychiatric medication, we recommend providing prior medical records when available so your provider can better review your treatment history.
Follow-up frequency varies based on your diagnosis, medication, symptom stability, treatment response and provider recommendations. Some patients need closer follow-up when starting or changing treatment.
Your provider can review your current regimen as part of the evaluation. Bring the medication name, dose, how long you have taken it, how it has helped and any side effects or concerns you have experienced.
